Summary
CIVIC STUDIO produced an Urban Design Study and Design and Access Statement to illustrate a design proposal to insert ‘gentle density’ into one of London’s most treasured Conservation Areas in the North-West of the City.
Working with award-winning UK architect Jack Woolley and top London structural engineers Momentum, existing housing typologies are tested and re-calibrated with new ground based extensions and urban basements to ensure a sensitive integration into the existing historic urban fabric.
Both contemporary and traditional architectural solutions were designed and tested to provide a varied and robust addition to the streetscape and character of the Conservation Area.
Extensive community and neighbour consultation and the sensitive greening of key Conservation Area edges created a best practice model that secured a swift planning permission.
The Local Authority states that the design proposals “significantly enhance the historic dwellinghouse and the streetscene of the Conservation Area”. (2015)
